INTERNATIONAL KARATE

Original Release: System 3, 1985, ZX Spectrum

Other Releases: Commodore 64 (1986), Atari ST (1987), Wii (2008)

A fairly blatant Karate Champ clone (to the point Data East sued over it), International Karate became popular by targeting computers that its "source of inspiration" was not ported to

International Karate is another in the line of blatant Karate Champ knockoffs, but I thought this one was actually a little more playable. Also received a nice score courtesy of Rob Hubbard, making it an attractive package even aside from the fact that it came out on computers that Karate Champ was not ported to back in the day.

It's pretty repetitive, but kinda fun. Red and White karate guys just keep fighting it out in level after level, the background and music change a few times and there's an occasional bonus stage where you break rocks with your head or dodge thrown weapons, but that's pretty much it. Nostalgia trippers will probably enjoy it but newcomers might get bored too fast for the money.
