Namco played it very safe with Splatterhouse 2, to the point that it's really like an "extra levels" pack for the first game ...  they also didn't bother with an arcade release, sending it straight to the Genesis where it remained until there was a Wii Virtual Console port about 16 years later.

Rick puts on the Terror Mask yet again and goes back to the mansion in an attempt at some Hollywood happy ending where he can somehow save Jennifer. But I guess the old mansion burned down, but there's a totally different mansion on the grounds right behind it? Anyway, it adds up to the same punchings and slide-kickings of a lot of the same monsters as the previous outing.

Well, despite all that, and the fact that the game is just as stiff and clunky as the first installment was, and that it's basically a dumb blood-and-guts fest that doesn't even have particularly good or original level design ... it's strangely entertaining anyway. I think that's mostly due to the creative graphical effects throughout the levels and the boss fights, and the soundtrack which is actually a pretty top-notch ambient horror work given the limits of the Genesis sound chip.

I dunno if it does enough different to convince those that found the prequel kinda stiff and uninteresting, but if you liked the first game you'll also probably enjoy this second helping.
