In late 2025 a largely-complete prototype of the unreleased Pit Fighter 2 was found and dumped, but it didn't seem to have any really big improvements in store

I was a kid hanging out in arcades when Pit Fighter came out, and I remember hardly ever seeing anyone play it despite it being everywhere. SOMEONE must have been playing it given the amount of cabinets that were around, however, as evidenced by both that and this unreleased sequel that Atari had under wraps.

I guess Atari was at least hedging their bets a little with it though, as it apparently wasn't intended to head to arcades - just straight to the Sega Genesis. The game was reportedly shown at the 1993 CES and covered in some magazines, but ended up scrapped for whatever reason. A fairly complete prototype from that year was discovered and dumped by the Video Game History Foundation in late 2025, though apparently requiring a bit of poking around to find as they don't seem to directly host it at their website.

It turns out the game, at least in this late development state, was pretty much more of the same with a few new playable characters thrown in (to include a female fighter). Some of these characters are taken from Guardians of the Hood, Atari's prior quasi-sequel to Pit Fighter. The game's progression is pretty much the same, fight dudes in underground fight club settings in level after level. Eventually the Executioner whispers a promo at you when you're getting close to fighting him, though this time it seems to be something about rape (?!).

For some reason you actually fight the Executioner for three levels in a row starting with Level 5, but the prototype then moves on to a few other guys. There are at least 12 levels in total in the game, but it seems to glitch out at the 12th and you can no longer see your character or the enemy. Anyway, it's too much like the original Pit Fighter if you didn't care for that game ... but if you did there's enough meat on the bone here to probably give it a look.
